Affected students must complete requirement in order to register for classes
Austin Community College is offering a series of on-campus meningitis clinics this month in advance of summer registration. As of spring 2012, Texas college students under age 30 must submit proof of immunization or an official exemption before they can register for classes.
Students enrolled since fall 2011 are exempt, per state law. Affected students must get the meningitis vaccination or submit a notarized exemption request form in order to attend a public college in Texas. (For requirement details, see austincc.edu/apply/immunizations.)
Walgreens provides the clinics and charges $133.99 per shot. Students can pay by cash, check, or credit card, and they will receive a receipt for insurance purposes. No appointments are necessary. The on-campus clinics are open to the community at the same price.
“This is a convenient way for students to get the vaccine,” says Dr. Kathleen Christensen, vice president of student support and success systems. “If students do not get the vaccine or submit an exemption, let me emphasize – they will not be able to register for classes.”
Meningitis clinic dates, times, and locations are as follows:

Can Fall 2012 Students get this vaccine in April, or do they have to wait?? Is this a one-time immunization? What if my child has had this shot before?
By mreyes April 5, 2012 - 2:38 pm
K, students will not be able to register for classes until they get the vaccination or exemption, so incoming summer or fall students should take action now. Any previous meningitis vaccination must be less than five years old. See the immunization information page for details.

I am a current student at UT wanting to take online courses this summer through ACC. I took courses last summer (2011) as well so I’m already a former student at ACC, does this put me in the exempted bracket? Or do I need to show proof of a shot/get a new shot in order to register for this summer?
By mreyes April 9, 2012 - 8:20 am
Elle, you are exempt IF you were at UT student for fall 2011 and spring 2012. Bring your university transcript confirming fall/spring enrollment to a campus admissions office in order to receive a summer waiver. Students coming to ACC from another school but have NOT been continuously enrolled must go the Magnus route and show us their proof.

Can you tell me the specific place at campus? I’m in ACC northridge campus. Because it is on Saturday, i don’t want to look for it rather than go directly.
Thank you.
By mreyes April 9, 2012 - 2:34 pm
Thanks for asking, June! The Northridge clinic will be in Building 3000, Rm. 3140, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

I can’t pay for the shot. Is there any where less expensive?
By Jenny April 10, 2012 - 4:44 pm
How long will it take for ACC to receive and process the proof of vaccine sent to Magnus?
By mreyes April 10, 2012 - 5:38 pm
Magnus is turning around verification pretty quickly when the documents are in order, but there are no guarantees. It’s a good idea to submit as soon as possible so you don’t face registration delays.
By Melanie_Calicoskys April 10, 2012 - 11:39 pm
I went to a local clinic and have documentation of the shot. However, I have never received a e-mail from Magnus on my austincc.edu e-mal account. How do I submit the paperwork?
By mreyes April 11, 2012 - 6:30 am
Melanie, Magnus Health’s customer service team is available to assist you. Email them directly at [email protected] or call (877) 461-6831.

I am an over 30 years old international student, enrolled since Fall 2011 and will enroll Fall 2012. Do I need an official exemption before register for 2012 fall classes? Is there anything I should do for my 9 years old son who is holding H2 visa?
By Melanie_Calicoskys April 11, 2012 - 8:41 am
Thanks MReyes! I did just that. However Magnus only gave the the awnser of “keep waiting” I originally registered for ACC in January and I activated my ACCmail in January however I did not register for classes in Spring Semester. I would of thought it would have been activated by now. I will give it a couple days and call Magnus again.

Let me repeat this so I know if I’m right or wrong: Students that attended ACC last semester (Fall 2011) and this semester (Spring 2012) and are going to enroll for Summer 2012 will have to get this shot?
By mreyes April 12, 2012 - 7:03 am
Destiny, the answer is no! Students who attended in fall 2011 and spring 2012 are exempt. Students can confirm their status by checking for holds in their Online Services accounts.

Where will the immunizations take place on the Highland campus??
By Jordan Burrow April 12, 2012 - 2:50 pm
I have already had my Meningitis Vaccine. My ACC email account will not be opened until I am allowed to register on May 9 which apparently had the email explaining the process of submitting the Meningitis Documentation. How else can I go about submitting the document to you via another email?
By S Antonowicz April 13, 2012 - 4:13 pm
Where do I go to submit my shot record so my hold can get lifted and I can register for school? Is there a fax # I can send it to?
By mreyes April 14, 2012 - 1:39 pm
S, you’ll find the information you need at the immunization web page
By keena April 13, 2012 - 9:22 pm
I am over 30 and have been enrolled since last summer. I submitted a request for the conscientious exempt form. Is that the only way to get this form? I have to wait for them to send it to me then take it to a notary and sign it in front of them then what do I do with it? Please help. I am supposed to register next week.
By mreyes April 14, 2012 - 1:28 pm
Keena, students over 30 are exempt so you should not have a hold on your record. Check your Online Services account under Academic Planning<Student Statuses.
By cost question April 14, 2012 - 8:34 am
Why has no one answered the person’s question regarding the cost of the vaccine? These companies are making a lot of money off of these vaccinations. For example, let’s say A & M has 16,000 incoming freshmen, that’s over $2 million dollars made from one group of incoming freshmen alone. Please note, ladies and gents, that you can ask for an exemption to this vaccination requirement, by visiting the department of health and human services website: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school/default.shtm#exclusions
Just fill out a simple form. The exemption will be mailed to you. I’m unaware of any aid in terms of getting the vaccination at a lower/no cost, so if anyone has information about that and can answer S’s question, that would be helpful. $133 is a lot of money for some of us. And 2 million dollars (for one college campus) is a lot of money for the pharmaceutical company producing this vaccine.

Far South Austin Public Health Center
405 W. Stassney Lane
512 972-5400
512 443-8723
All you have to do is schedule an appointment
and its $10 after you get the shot. Cash and cards are accepted. Please let people know so that they don’t go and spend $133 that they don’t have… WE ARE COLLEGE STUDENTS, we are broke as it is we can’t afford $133 shots !
By mreyes April 14, 2012 - 7:41 pm
Thank you, ACC student. The Far South Austin Public Health Center serves uninsured adults as well as children who are uninsured, on Medicaid, or CHIP. Call ahead since they report the supply of free vaccines has been low. The ACC clinics are operated by Walgreens as a convenience to students. You can see a list of providers and information on exemptions on the immunization information page.

My son is currently enrolled at Texas A&M and will be taking classes at ACC in the summer. His doctor no longer has verification of his shot, but it was required before his admittance into the dorms at A&M for 2007. Does he still need to have the verification of the shot if he was enorolled in another University previously.
By mreyes April 19, 2012 - 6:15 pm
Robin, university students who attend ACC in summer only remain exempt from the meningitis requirement if they can prove they are returning to their university. Have your son drop by the ACC Admissions Office with a copy of his A&M transcript listing his upcoming fall classes.
By JH April 25, 2012 - 1:40 pm
I am a former student at ACC and a current student at TX State-San Marcos. I am attempting to register for one online summer course at ACC, but there is a hold on my account for not having a meningitis vaccination. Can I be exempt from the new rule because I will not be taking the course on campus? Can I be exempt because I have been taking classes there since 2007? Thank you.
JH
By mreyes April 25, 2012 - 3:42 pm
JH, you are exempt from the rule if you attended Texas State in fall 2011/spring 2012 AND are returning for fall 2012. Take a copy of your transcript, showing upcoming fall courses there, to an ACC Admissions Office as proof of continuing your Texas State enrollment.
By Crystal April 25, 2012 - 2:30 pm
I received my shot today and they recorded it on my shot record, is that still okay to show prove so I can start summer classes?
By mreyes April 25, 2012 - 3:43 pm
Crystal, follow the steps on the immunization information webpage to submit your records to Magnus Health.
By Quinn P April 25, 2012 - 8:27 pm
I have submitted a conscientious waiver to Magnus health and they have accepted it and set an expiration date. When can I expect to have the hold on my registering lifted?
By Cristal April 27, 2012 - 2:39 pm
Are these the only dates yall were going to offer the vaccine? will you have additional dates to offer it?
By mreyes April 29, 2012 - 4:04 pm
Cristal, there are no plans to offer on-campus shots at this time; however, the provide Walgreens has them at their stores. See the immunization information page for a list of providers who have contacted us with their information.

Magnus health approved my forms today, but ACC still has me barred! When is it going to clear up?
By mreyes April 29, 2012 - 4:04 pm
FM, it takes about 2 business days to remove the hold.
By egriffi April 30, 2012 - 2:51 pm
I’m an incoming Summer 2012 student and haven’t turned in my immunization records with my recent meningitis shot. But I have no holds in my student statuses – how do I get my Magnus Health account now?
Also, is the vaccination even required if you are only taking a distance learning course?
By Mholder April 30, 2012 - 5:45 pm
Do I have to have the vaccine if I was already enrolled at ACC since last summer(2011) and have not left since?
By E May 1, 2012 - 5:44 pm
Is there a place where I can still get a low cost meningitis vaccine? I’m not too excited to pay $155. :/
