July 2012 – Elgin Campus Update

Elgin Campus aerial view, July 6, 2012The steel structure is complete except for a few miscellaneous steel members and roofing details. The exterior walls are being constructed, and the look and feel of the building is beginning to take shape. The roofing and exterior building brick will begin at the end of July. Mechanical yard masonry veneer is ongoing.

The building design includes a ceremonial open stair in the middle of the building, which will be flown in through the skylight opening once fabrication is complete. When the building envelope is complete and the skylight installed, the building will be “dried in.” This essentially means that weather will not affect construction activities inside the building.

Currently all floor slabs are poured, walls are being framed, ductwork is being hung, and sprinkler pipes are being installed. The chillers, boilers, and generator have arrived on site. The vast majority of site paving is complete. Utility infrastructure is ongoing.

The design team is involved with the furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the campus, which will be installed after construction substantial completion next spring. The campus will open for fall semester 2013.
