Dance Professor Holds Signing for New Choreography Book August 18

Darla Johnson, founder of ACC’s Dance Department and an adjunct professor.

Darla Johnson, founder of ACC’s Dance Department and an adjunct professor, will hold a book signing to celebrate the release of her new choreography book, “The Art of Listening: Intuition and Improvisation in Choreography.” The event will take place Saturday, August 18 at 4 p.m. at BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar St.

Listening is a key element in the realization of dance, according to Johnson; “The Art of Listening” takes the reader on a guided tour of the different elements of listening that take a dance from an idea to actuality. Johnson’s book also provides choreographers practical advice on rehearsal and performance etiquette, as well suggestions on how to engage in the creative process.

“Stepping out of comfort zones and following the voice of improvisation is a much-need necessity for modern choreographers,” Johnson says. “Listening is exactly where we need to start.”

During the event, Johnson will be reading portions of “The Art of Listening.” The event will include live dance performances by ACC students.
