Before Voting, Learn About Issues and Share Views at Sept. 18 Constitution Debate

With the presidential election just months away, ACC’s sixth annual Constitution Debate Day Celebration can help students make an educated vote through examination of their knowledge and beliefs about the Constitution and how it affects today’s politically-charged climate.

The debate will take place Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Palmer Events Center (900 Barton Springs Rd.). Students do not need to register to participate; simply show up at the venue.

Facilitators will engage debaters on a range of topics, including same-sex marriage, racial discrimination, and legalizing marijuana. Hundreds of students are expected to attend.

“This election year, it is particularly important for students to take advantage of this opportunity to gain a better understanding of how the U.S. Constitution impacts their lives today,” says Peck Young, director of ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS). “Coming to the debate is the best way for students to see clearly the importance of the Constitution before they vote.”

Representatives from the League of Women Voters will be on hand to assist students who need to register to vote or change their address.

The event will be hosted by CPPPS, ACC’s Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Center for Student Political Studies, the Student Government Association, and the City of Austin, with honorary Chairman Council Member Mike Martinez. Co-sponsors are the ACLU Foundation of Texas and the American Board of Trial Advocates.
