Students Compete in National Math Contest, Place First in Region

The ACC Foundation honored ACC math students at the December Board of Trustees meeting.

The Austin Community College Foundation is honoring the college’s top scorers in a national math competition. The Student Math League, sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, is an annual contest, with final results announced in spring.

The team of ACC students is currently first place in the southwest region and 20th nationally. The competition consists of two exams, one given during the fall semester and one during the spring semester.

At the December Board of Trustees meeting, the ACC Foundation presented awards to the 10 highest-scoring students in the fall round.

Caleb Miller (1st place – $250)

Miller is a mathematics major.

Mark Lindberg (2nd place – $200)

Lindberg is an Austin native who is majoring in music and plans to attend a four-year university after ACC. This is the fifth consecutive semester that Lindberg has finished first or second in the competition.

Michael Black (3rd place – $150)

Black is an Early College Start student who is homeschooled. While he is undecided on what college to attend in the future, he would like to major in aerospace engineering, though he also is interested in business and law.

Ethan Lindell (4th place – $150)

Lindell is an engineering major.

Jer-Ming Chan (5th place – $125)

Chan emigrated from Taiwan four years ago. He is from a family that loves mathematics, with both his parents working as engineers.

Tan Minh Vu (tied for 6th place – $125)

Minh Vu is an international student from Vietnam. He is majoring in business administration.

Daniel Whiteside (tied for 6th place – $125)

Whiteside is a mathematics major.

Taeksang Lee (7th place – $100)

Lee is majoring in business and government.

Negin Mohammadi Raoof (8th place – $100)

Raoof plans to transfer to a four-year college or university to study electrical engineering.

Edward Balaguer (9th place – $100)

Balaguer plans to major in engineering at ACC.

The ACC Foundation provides a 2:1 match for prize donations. Since 2002, the ACC Foundation has provided the Math Department with more than $34,000 in matching funds for 190 students.
