Adult Education Programs Now Enrolling for Spring

Enrollment is under way for programs in ACC’s Adult Education Division, which has a variety of offerings to help adult learners get to the next step in their lives – from earning a GED or enrolling in college classes to starting a new career.

“Our programs give students the knowledge and the confidence they need to be successful, either in the classroom or out in the workforce,” says David Borden, executive director of Adult Education.

Programs include GED preparation, English as a Second Language classes, workforce certification programs, courses to ease the transition to college, and more. Spring offerings include:

Certificate-Track Classes: ACC offers free classes to help adults get trained and certified in high-demand careers, such as certified nurse’s aide, heating and air condition (HVAC) technician, and computer technician. The program also offers courses for English as a Second Language learners, who can choose from a business office assistant course and medical terminology. Mandatory information sessions for interested applicants will be held in January. For more information, visit the certificate-track webpage or contact Nora Fallon (223.5333 or [email protected]).

Transitions: This college-readiness program helps high school graduates and GED earners develop and reinforce skills in reading, writing, and math, so they can successfully complete freshman-level courses. The free program also includes career counseling and guides students through the ACC admissions and financial aid processes. The 10-week program begins in late January; applications are due Friday, Jan. 4. Learn more at austincc.edu/transitions or contact Charlene Gill (223.5122 or [email protected]).

Adult Education programs had a huge impact on Cay Dearden, who signed up for Transitions after a horseback riding accident caused her to reevaluate her career options. She had always wanted to go to college, but after raising her four children and earning her GED in her thirties, she thought she would never have the opportunity to earn a college degree.

“Transitions taught me that I could really do it – I could finally go to college,” Dearden says. “I believe other people who sign up can have the same rewarding experience I did. Yes, it takes hard work and determination, but it’s so rewarding to be one step closer to reaching your dreams.”
