Austin Community College had the highest pass rate in Texas on the CPA exam for the most recent testing period. The rankings are based on Texas colleges and universities with at least five candidates testing.
For the period of October through December 2012, ACC students passed more than 80 percent of sections tested. That is the highest percentage in the state. In addition, ACC is the only community college to make the list. The official rankings from the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy include:
- Austin Community College (80.56 percent of sections passed)
- Tarleton State University (71.43 percent of sections passed)
- University of Texas at Austin (68.8 percent of sections passed)
- Southern Methodist University (66.25 percent of sections passed)
- Baylor University (63.21 percent of sections passed)
- Trinity University (62.96 percent of sections passed)
- Abilene Christian University (60.98 percent of sections passed)
- Texas Tech University (57.25 percent of sections passed)
- Texas State University (53.33 percent of sections passed)
- Texas Christian University (52.73 percent of sections passed)
“This ranking speaks volumes about the quality of ACC’s program and our students,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president/CEO. “As a CPA, I know the exam is not easy, and we consistently rank in the top 10. To be at the top of the list is a great accomplishment and reflects well on the work we’re doing at ACC.”
ACC’s Accounting Department is approved by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy to help students meet their educational requirements to sit for the CPA exam. In order to take the exam, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree with 150 credit hours, including coursework in accounting, accounting ethics, and business.

Way to go ACC!
Coming from an accounting student, I found ACC’s courses better organized than those of Texas State. ACC’s courses are more demanding.
For example, I took Intermediate Accounting 1 at TX State. The course consisted of reading the textbook, answering text book problems, and going over the text book & the problems in class, then taking tests.
ACC’s Intermediate Accounting 2 this semester is going to involve the book, book problems, but also two separate sets of online problems with WileyPlus (online educational software), FASB Codification research assignments, and I might be leaving one thing out…
I paid about $1150 for Texas State’s course, and now I am paying about $250 for something even better at ACC!!
ACC’s program should be receiving more attention, it really is an amazing asset for students here in Austin looking for alternative to expensive masters programs.

Congratrulations for the continuing success. The accounting department professors have, once again, done an outstanding job helping motivated students prepare to succeed on this difficult exam. Well done, all!
