Drama Department Presents “Beauty is the Best Priest” Feb. 22 – March 3

The spirit of the Harlem Renaissance is coming to Austin as the ACC Drama Department, in partnership with the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, presents “Beauty is the Best Priest: Short Plays of the Harlem Renaissance.” Performances take place Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from Feb. 22 to March 3 at the Boyd Vance Theater at the Carver Museum (1165 Angelina St.). Â Showtime is 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; Sunday performances begin at 2 p.m.

Representing the cultural flowering of Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s, ACC’s spring production includes prize-winning short works by African-American women, including Zora Neale Hurston, May Miller, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, and Ottie Graham.

“These women were amongst the most influential playwrights, poets, novelists, journalists, and activists of the era,” says Marcus McQuirter, department chair and one of the play’s four directors. “We are honored to be partnering with the Carver Museum for this production.”

Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for the public, with proceeds benefiting drama scholarships and the Carver Museum’s Summer Youth Performing Arts Program. Tickets can be purchased in advance through ACC Marketplace.
