Helping Students Face College Fears ‘1-on-1’

ACC 1-on-1, the college’s new advising initiative, is gaining momentum as it helps students navigate the college planning process.

The program allows current, former, and prospective students – including those who have yet to apply – to meet with an advisor at any campus before the rush of registration season.

Dorado Kinney, dean of student services at Eastview Campus, said the number of students wanting to schedule an appointment increased each day during the program’s first week, when the college received more than 500 phone calls and emails about the service.

Advisor Marcus Crayton says that while student advising is not new or different, emphasizing the one-on-one interaction seems to strike a chord.

“It eliminates the fear of the unknown,” he says, adding that some students who arrive with a “deer-in-the headlights,” look leave with a plan of action.

Student Cinnamon Walker says she went to her 1-on-1 session to discuss taking summer classes. While there, she learned valuable information about how she could become eligible for financial aid.

“It was quick and easy,” she said. “I recommend that everybody goes. It was pretty cool.”

ACC 1-on-1 will be offered at all ACC campuses through April 19. Students or prospective students can make an appointment through a dedicated phone number or email address. Call (512) 223.7747 or email [email protected]. Information on the program is available at austincc.edu/getstarted.
