Hear Insights Into the Life of Ralph Waldo Emerson, April 9

"The Three Fates" is among the works Bogard will discuss.

English Professor Diane Whitley-Bogard will be sharing research completed on her recent sabbatical at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Eastview Campus in Room 8500. Bogard will display reproductions of art owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson and discuss how they may have influenced his work.

Bogard decided to pursue the study after participating in a National Endowment for the Humanities workshop on transcendentalism in Concord, Massachusetts a few years ago. She obtained permission from Emerson’s ancestors to photograph and study a portion of his art collection.

“Emerson is known primarily as the father of transcendentalism,” Bogard says, “but he also was like many of us. He raised children, he visited with friends, he appreciated art. I’m hoping my presentation will offer a more down-to-earth, accessible view of him.”

Austin news station YNN also is planning a feature about Bogard’s research.

The presentation is open to faculty, students, and guests. For more information, email Diane Whitley-Bogard.
