Academy Graduates Reflect Commitment to Student Success

Academy participants presented team projects.

Students at the recent commencement exercises weren’t the only ACC graduates celebrating: Employees in the college’s 2012-13 ACC Academy class marked their completion of the program at a ceremony May 17 at the Eastview Campus.

ACC President/CEO Dr. Richard Rhodes praised the 25 participants for their commitment to helping students achieve their goals.

“Making the leap to transformational change takes people in the organization to make it happen,” he said. “Focusing that effort around the goals of student success at the college is invaluable.”

Academy participants were divided into five teams charged with developing a project focusing on a specific Student Success goal. Ideas presented included:

Goal 1: Increase persistence.

Project: Create a student ambassador program.

Goal 2: Complete developmental and adult education course progression to credit courses.

Project: Draw upon focus group data from non-traditional students to identify ways to encourage progression to credit courses.

Goal 3: Increase completion of all attempted courses with a “C” or better.

Project: Raise awareness of implications of not earning a “C” or higher through website communications, posters, orientation, and course syllabi; include “C or better” policy in master syllabi.

Goal 4: Increase degree/certificate graduates and transfer rates.

Project: Launch a Career Development Center at the new Highland facility with state-of-the art job search and job placement resources.

Goal 5: Increase success equity across all racial/ethnic/gender/income groups.

Project: Provide information about scholarships, college resources, and other support services to prospective Early College High School students.
