ACC Marks Juneteenth with Musical Celebration, June 14

Austin Community College will host “Sounds of Freedom: ACC’s Musical Celebration of Juneteenth” on Friday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd.).

The event is free and open to the public. Activities include entertainment, games, and a teen summit. Beginning at 1 p.m., Austin singers and wordsmiths will perform live in the courtyard. The public is invited to bring picnic baskets and blankets to relax on the lawn during the performances. Food and other refreshments will be available. Visit ACC’s Community Outreach webpage for the complete event schedule.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is a national commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday honors the arrival of troops in Galveston to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

The event is sponsored by ACC, the college’s Community Outreach Office, ACC’s African American Cultural Center, the Men of Distinction program (which provides support to African-American male students), the City of Austin, Austin Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Army National Guard, and Austin NAACP.

In addition, ACC will be represented at the Central Texas Juneteenth Celebration’s annual parade, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Comal Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The ACC Engage dance team will make its first appearance in the parade. For more information, visit the Central Texas Juneteenth website.
