ACC Math Students Compete at National Competition, Place First in Region

ACC math students recently placed first in the southwest region in the annual Student Math League competition, sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

The team of ACC students finished 23rd nationally out of 197 participating community colleges. The competition consists of two exams, one given during the fall semester and one during the spring.

ACC student Caleb Miller was the southwest region’s top individual scorer, combining scores from both the fall and spring exams. For his efforts, Miller was awarded a personal copy of Mathematica, a state-of-the-art computer program for mathematics.

Top-placing ACC students received prize money donated by faculty and friends of the Mathematics Department. The ACC Foundation provides a 2:1 match for prize donations. The highest-scoring students in the spring round were:

Mark Lindberg (1st place)

Jason (LJ) Smith (2nd place)

Michael Black (3rd place)

Adriana Murga (4th place)

Chung-Wei Pan (5th place)

Taeksang Lee (tied for 6th place)

Caleb Miller (tied for 6th place)

Since 2002, the ACC Foundation has provided the Math Department with more than $34,000 in matching funds for 190 students.
