Students will have the opportunity to tackle tough issues during ACC’s 7th annual Constitution Debate Day Celebration – commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
The debate will take place Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Palmer Events Center (900 Barton Springs Rd.).
During the event, students will examine their knowledge and beliefs about the Constitution while reflecting on their rights. Facilitators will engage debaters on a range of current topics – including use of force in Syria, assault weapons bans, abortion laws, voter ID laws, and university admission policies.
“This event is a great way for students to expand their understanding of the Constitution, share their beliefs, and learn from one another,” says Peck Young, director of ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS).
The event will be hosted by CPPPS, ACC’s Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Center for Student Political Studies, the Student Government Association, and the City of Austin, with Council Member Mike Martinez serving as honorary chairman. The American Board of Trial Advocates is co-sponsoring the event.

These events are exciting and the only regret that I have is that ordinarily we don’t see the turn out that we should, given the importance of the topic. The students of today are the voters and decision makers of tomorrow, and their engagement in the constitution of our country is paramount for the sustainability of a properly functioning society. As a foreigner myself, later naturalized, I have a great appreciation for the constitution and the rights and privileges it has afforded me. Through the rights of pursuing liberty, justice and property I’ve been fortunate to have formed and grown a successful marketing agency (http://www.fahrenheitmarketing.com) and I am now able to continue on shaping the culture around me by enforcing and securing these very rights to each one of my employees.
