Nov. 6 Veterans Fair Highlights New Programs and Services

Austin Community College is expanding services and programs for military and veteran students.

A veterans fair is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6 at ACC Round Rock Campus to provide information on new educational opportunities, support services, and other resources. Hundreds of veterans and their families are expected to attend (2-5 p.m., 4400 College Park Dr., Building 2000, Room 2131).

Among the programs that will be featured at the fair is VetSuccess on Campus, a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. As part of the program, vocational counselor Brad Robichaux will be available at Round Rock Campus and other campuses to help current and prospective students with their veteran benefits and referrals for counseling or medical services.

“Veterans face unique challenges when they transition into the college setting,” Robichaux says. “I want to help veterans resolve these challenges so they can complete their education.”

The college also will provide information about College Credit for Heroes, a partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. ACC is using grant funds to develop streamlined evaluation criteria for awarding veterans credit based on their military training in energy, information technology, manufacturing, advanced technology, and computer technology.

A separate Department of Labor grant is allowing the college to transform computer programmer training to competency-based learning, with a focus on veteran students. Military experience can accelerate the process of earning industry credentials and moving into the technology workforce.

“Veterans need to know they can achieve a college degree and succeed,” says Mervin Jones, an ACC counselor and Army veteran. “ACC is committed to doing everything we can to help these highly skilled men and women.”

The Nov. 6 resource fair will be held in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin Student Veterans Services.
