ACC Opens Spring Semester Registration with Focus on Affordability

ACC classes cost 74 percent less for in-district students than the in-state average for area public universities.

With a growing number of jobs set to require college education and training, Austin Community College is opening its spring semester registration with an emphasis on expanding access to higher education through affordability.

“At a time when student loan debt exceeds credit card debt in this country, it’s more important than ever to provide affordable access to college,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president/CEO. “Affordability is such a key factor in keeping students enrolled – and that’s critical for the future of our region, state, and country.”

Figures from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board show ACC classes cost 74 percent less for in-district students than the average for in-state students at area public universities. In-district residents pay $67 per credit hour in tuition at ACC – the lowest-cost college education in the region.

ACC provides the most transfer students to area universities, and students who transfer perform as well as or better than other university students. The college also offers more than 100 areas of study – including computer programming, nursing, and veterinary technology – for those who want to directly enter the workforce. According to a 2013 report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, 65 percent of job vacancies by 2020 will require at least some college education and training.

“ACC is a great place to start college or to retrain for the open jobs in Central Texas,” says Drew Scheberle, senior vice president for education and talent development at the Austin Chamber of Commerce. “Thirty percent of open jobs today are in IT and health care. ACC is feeding that pipeline.”

Spring registration is now available for current and new students, with classes beginning January 13. Students can view the spring schedule on the ACC website. The Student Recruitment Office (512.223.7701) and austincc.edu/enroll provide resources for getting started at ACC. For more information on spring registration, visit austincc.edu/register.
