Enrollment is under way for Austin Community College’s Transitions program, a free college preparation course for adults. Applications are due Friday, Jan. 3.

Transitions helps high school graduates and GED earners develop and reinforce skills in reading, writing, and math so they can successfully complete freshman-level college courses. The program also includes career counseling and one-on-one guidance through the ACC enrollment and financial aid application processes.

“The Transitions program works,” says program graduate Fernando Martinez, who is now earning As and Bs in his ACC courses. “I met great instructors who helped with networking opportunities, as well as other students who supported me even after the program ended.”

Funded through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Transitions program pays for college readiness assessment fees and class textbooks. Participants completing the program receive a $100 stipend; those who go on to complete an ACC credit course with a grade of C or better receive a $250 stipend and become eligible for a $1,000 ACC scholarship.

“There is a difference between being eligible for college and being ready for college,” says Charlene Gill, Transitions coordinator. “Transitions gives students the confidence they need to be successful.”

The next 12-week Transitions course begins Jan. 27; classes will meet Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd.).

To be eligible, you must be a legal U.S. resident and 18 years or older with a GED, or 20 or older with a high school diploma. Current and former developmental education students are encouraged to apply. Applicants participate in a brief interview prior to enrolling and must maintain a 75 percent attendance rate for the course.
