ACC Expands Accelerated Training for In-Demand Computer Programming Jobs

Austin Community College is expanding course offerings for Accelerated Programmer Training, an online program designed to speed entry into high-demand tech careers and lead to a college degree.

According to the Austin Chamber, last fall more than 7,400 Central Texas-area job openings required computer and IT skills, representing 20 percent of all job openings for that period. Half of the top ten posted positions are in the information technology field, with average annual salaries ranging from $46,000 to $96,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“This is exactly the kind of program we need to keep these high-demand jobs in Central Texas and put residents to work,” says Brian Clement of Facility Solutions Group (FSG), an Austin-based enterprise energy management firm that employs programmers. “ACC’s program creates a new pipeline of employees with the skills to create and support our varied IT initiatives. The program allows qualified students to get through their education and into the workforce more quickly.”

ACC’s program is designed for students to move through coursework as quickly as they show mastery of the subject. Prior IT knowledge isn’t necessary, but students who demonstrate certain competencies can move ahead more quickly. All classes are taken online, allowing students to fit the lessons into their schedules.

All credits earned through the program will count toward a certificate or associate degree. Financial aid, scholarships, and tuition payment plans are available.

“This program really revolutionizes how we teach students the skills and knowledge necessary for IT jobs,” says Linda Smarzik, dean of computer studies and advanced technology. “ACC has worked closely with a variety of employers to make sure Accelerated Programmer Training meets workforce needs, and we’ll be able to directly connect students with internship and job opportunities.”

APT was implemented last fall through a $2 million U.S. Department of Labor grant and in partnership with WGU Texas, an online university that uses proven competency-based learning strategies.
