IT Update: Beware of latest email phishing scam

Austin Community College students and employees should be aware of recent “phishing” attempts to fraudulently obtain email account information.

Emails that appear to be from another ACC email account are prompting recipients to view an attachment. They then are prompted to log in to Google Docs with their username and password.

Remember, ACC will never ask for an email password. To prevent someone from accessing your email account:

  • Hover over the emailed link with your cursor to determine whether it’s a legitimate ACC or Google address. Or, click on the address to view the address bar and verify that it is a legitimate ACC or Google Mail address.
  • Do not type in your account name and password unless you are sure you are using the authentic login page. To check, access the login page from a new browser window.
  • Phone the person who sent the link to verify it is legitimate.

If you think you have provided account information to a phisher, you can change your email password on the ACCmail Account Management page.

For a safer form of email login, follow the two-step authentication process.

For questions, contact the Student Help Center (students) or Technical Support Services (employees).
