Austin Community College (ACC) will host its eighth annual Diez y Seis event with special guest speaker, Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos on Wednesday, September 16, from noon to 1 p.m. at Riverside Campus (1020 Grove Blvd.) in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
“It’s important that we recognize the diverse contributions of Hispanic and Latino-Americans,” says Dr. Mariano Diaz-Miranda, ACC professor of history and director of the Latino/Latin American Studies Center. “Much of our history as a state has been shaped by their influence.”
The cultural celebration commemorates Mexico’s declaration of independence. Secretary Cascos, along with local historians, will pay tribute to the cultural, historical, and political contributions of Tejanos, Mexican-Americans, and other Hispanics.
Guests will enjoy the rhythmic steps of Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico and entertainment from Johnny Degollado y su Conjunto and Mariachi Estrella.
The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by the ACC Center for Public Policy & Political Studies, the Latino/Latin American Studies Center, the Office of Student Success, and Student Life.
