ACC celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Diez y Seis event

Austin Community College (ACC) will host its eighth annual Diez y Seis event with special guest speaker, Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos on Wednesday, September 16, from noon to 1 p.m. at Riverside Campus (1020 Grove Blvd.) in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

“It’s important that we recognize the diverse contributions of Hispanic and Latino-Americans,” says Dr. Mariano Diaz-Miranda, ACC professor of history and director of the Latino/Latin American Studies Center. “Much of our history as a state has been shaped by their influence.”Diez y Seis

The cultural celebration commemorates Mexico’s declaration of independence. Secretary Cascos, along with local historians, will pay tribute to the cultural, historical, and political contributions of Tejanos, Mexican-Americans, and other Hispanics.

Guests will enjoy the rhythmic steps of Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico and entertainment from Johnny Degollado y su Conjunto and Mariachi Estrella.

The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by the ACC Center for Public Policy & Political Studies, the Latino/Latin American Studies Center, the Office of Student Success, and Student Life.
