Austin Community College students, faculty, and staff spent two days aiding the area’s hungry and homeless through the first Operation Riverbats event, coordinated by the Office of Student Life.
“What started as an effort to build community among first-year students turned into a meaningful way for the entire ACC family to give back to the Austin community,” says Student Life Coordinator Candice Brown. Brown says the group chose to help agencies that support the homeless because of the number of ACC students who benefit from their services.
Here is what the group accomplished:
- Boxed and sorted 2,400 meals for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.
- Served at the reference desk and played games and interacted with about 40 people at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless.
- Prepared and served 300 lunches at Caritas of Austin.
- Prepared, served, and shared dinner with four families and played with children with Foundation for the Homeless.
Students also collected donations of food, clothing, backpacks, and blankets.
