ACC celebrates Hispanic Heritage with Diez y Seis event

Austin Community College (ACC) celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with its ninth annual Diez y Seis event Thursday, September 15, from noon to 1 p.m. at Riverside Campus (1020 Grove Blvd.).

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 6.52.09 PMSpecial guest speaker is longtime Texas legislator Gonzalo Barrientos, who represented Travis County in the state Senate and House from 1975 to 2007.

The cultural celebration commemorates Mexico’s declaration of independence and Texas’ first Independence Day. Barrientos and local historians will pay tribute to the cultural, historical, and political contributions of Tejanos, Mexican-Americans, and other Hispanics. Other speakers include Consul General from Mexico Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, County Judge Sarah Eckhardt, Mayor Steve Adler, and Councilmember Delia Garza.

“It’s important that we recognize the diverse contributions of Hispanic and Latino-Americans,” says Dr. Mariano Diaz-Miranda, ACC professor of history and director of the Latino/Latin American Studies Center. “Much of our history as a state has been shaped by their influence.”

Guests will enjoy the rhythmic steps of Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico and entertainment from Johnny Degollado y su Conjunto and Mariachi Estrella.

The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by the ACC Center for Public Policy & Political Studies and ACC’s Latino/Latin American Studies Center (El Centro).
