ACC examines the Roma in Europe: Minority among Minorities

Austin Community College (ACC) professors will examine international social and economic affairs in the college’s global issues speaker series this fall.

The first presentation, “The Roma In Europe: Minority among Minorities,” is Wednesday, September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Highland Business Center, Room 201 (5930 Middle Fiskville Rd.). ACC Sociology Professor Dr. Samuel Echevarria-Cruz, who spent a year in Romania as a Fulbright Scholar, will discuss the Roma community’s struggle against discrimination.

“The Roma people are disparagingly referred to as ‘gypsies.’ We will explore the historical origins of this community along with the popular, negative stereotypes developed over time,” says Echevarria-Cruz. “Together, we will compare the challenges in the country to the realities minorities face in the United States.”

The series, presented by ACC’s International Programs Office, is free and open to the public.
