Austin Community College (ACC) professors will examine international social and economic affairs in the college’s global issues speaker series this fall.
The first presentation, “The Roma In Europe: Minority among Minorities,” is Wednesday, September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Highland Business Center, Room 201 (5930 Middle Fiskville Rd.). ACC Sociology Professor Dr. Samuel Echevarria-Cruz, who spent a year in Romania as a Fulbright Scholar, will discuss the Roma community’s struggle against discrimination.
“The Roma people are disparagingly referred to as ‘gypsies.’ We will explore the historical origins of this community along with the popular, negative stereotypes developed over time,” says Echevarria-Cruz. “Together, we will compare the challenges in the country to the realities minorities face in the United States.”
The series, presented by ACC’s International Programs Office, is free and open to the public.

The main problem with the Roma community in Romania is the lack of an education plan for them. I think this is the main problem that should be solved first and the integration would be way easier.

Roma community is spread all over the Europe and their behavior are not always what we, the ctizens, are expecting from them. The lack in their education and the populist reforms made for supporting them, just made the sittuation even worth in all European countrys.

Ah and by the way, I think it is a bit harsh to call it “discrimination” tho. It is most likely .. “avoidance”. Integrating Roma communities is a really hard challenge. There is a loop… If you help them with material benefits, they will stop working or using the benefits for education. If you try to educate them without giving them material reward, they will easily drop the education centers for easy money “jobs”. So what’s the plan? I’m really curious about how you will do this.
