ACC financial aid specialists offer free FAFSA help

The Austin Community College (ACC) Financial Aid Office is hosting workshops to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA Frenzy workshops are available at all campuses through April 8. (See schedule below.)

“College expenses can be overwhelming. A lot of people don’t realize how easy it is to get help. Most people qualify for financial aid,” says Terry Bazan, ACC student assistance executive director. “To be eligible, students first need to fill out the FAFSA.”

The FAFSA is an online form that allows the government to determine a student’s eligibility for financial aid through federal grants, work study funds, and loans. Millions of families fill it out every year.

Unlike previous years, the FAFSA is based on previously reported income and tax information, so applicants don’t have to wait until they know their income for the current year, or make estimates that later may need to be adjusted. For the 2017-18 form, applicants will submit 2015 income and tax information. An online IRS Data Retrieval Tool is available to help students compile their information.

Additional FAFSA support is available community-wide through Tuesday, April 18. Students may visit Foundation Communities’ community financial centers located in North and South Austin. For more information visit the Foundation Communities website.

The priority deadline for the fall 2017 semester is April 1. Access the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.gov/. For more information visit ACC’s Financial Aid webpage or call the financial aid hotline at 512-223-4243.
