ACC honors Hispanic Heritage at Díez y Seis celebration

Austin Community College (ACC) celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with its 10th annual Díez y Seis event Thursday, September 14, from noon to 1 p.m. at Riverside Campus (1020 Grove Blvd.).

Longtime state legislator Gonzalo Barrientos, who represented Travis County in the Senate and House from 1975 to 2007, will serve as guest speaker. UT history professor Dr. Emilio Zamora will be among the special guests.

The cultural celebration commemorates Mexico’s declaration of independence and Texas’ first Independence Day. Barrientos and local historians will pay tribute to the cultural, historical, and political contributions of Tejanos, Mexican-Americans, and other Hispanics.

“We remember the efforts of a group of freedom-loving Tejanos in San Antonio who demanded their independence from Spain,” says Dr. Mariano Diaz-Miranda, ACC professor of history and director of the Latino/Latin American Studies Center (El Centro). “History plays an important role in the values and traditions important to surrounding communities. The flame of freedom lit by Díez y Seis was burning in Texas long before 1836.”

Guests will enjoy the rhythmic steps of Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico and musical entertainment from Johnny Degollado y su Conjunto and Mariachi Estrella.

The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by the ACC Center for Public Policy & Political Studies and El Centro.
