Dr. Wayne Maines joins Austin Community College in the new role of vice president of safety and operations, where he leads efforts to ensure the safety, security, and building operations are maintained throughout the district’s.
Wayne comes to us from the University of Maine System, where he was executive director of Safety, Health Services, Transportation and Security for 14 years. Prior to that, he was corporate manager of Health, Safety and Training at Schenectady International, Inc. in New York for ten years. He has his Doctor of Education in Safety Management/Education from West Virginia University, Master of Science in Safety Management/Education from West Virginia University, Bachelor of Science, Natural Resources from Cornell University, and Associate of Science, Natural Resources from Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
His responsibilities include oversight of the District Police Department, Building and Grounds, Quality, Custodial Services, Life Safety Management, Security Management, Emergency Management, Business Continuity and Environmental, Health and Safety.
Safety is a critical area for colleges and universities nationwide, and Wayne will be reviewing and updating ACC’s safety and operations management system. In addition to safety management, Wayne’s focus will be to ensure that our facilities across the district maintain a high level of quality in its operations and appearance that supports our vision for student success.
As part of the review, the college is exploring the feasibility of increasing security and planning for events hosted throughout the district. The first security initiative is the use of portable metal detectors and other equipment. The practice may be tested at upcoming Board of Trustee meeting and other public events.
In addition to learning his new role, Wayne has been familiarizing himself with our campuses and classes. He recently stopped by Highland Campus to visit an evening jewelry class and meet with faculty and students.
“Process is important, but communication is equally so. My goal is to develop a comprehensive safety and operations management system that supports the college’s strategic plan, and sharing it with faculty, staff, and the community,” says Maines. “Everyone I have met so far, faculty, staff, and students, love ACC.
