Celebrate Earth Week April 16-20

Austin Community College celebrates the 48th annual Earth Day April 22 with a week of sustainability events beginning Monday, April 16. The events highlight the college’s commitment to sustainable practices and engage students, faculty, and staff. For 2018, there are more than 25 events across 7 ACC locations!

Warm up for Earth Week by joining ACC Green Teams citywide cleanup events that are part of Keep Austin Beautiful Day. ACC’s cleanup sites are:

Northridge Electronics Recycling Drive
Drop off your old electronics at electronic recycle bins placed in campus hallways. There will be an info session/presentation 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, at the Bldg. 1000 breezeway. Contact: [email protected]

Northridge Earth Week Celebration
April 16 – April 19 at Room 1112
Hosted by Student Life, the week will include a documentary screening, the release of native butterflies, and the opportunity to design your own plant pot (soil and seeds included). Contact: [email protected]

Public Transportation Fairs

ACC Energy & Sustainability Office joins Capital Metro to promote ACC’s Green Pass and public transportation. Learn about green commuting options and sustainability. Registration is not required.

Elgin Campus – Garden Weed and Mulch

The Elgin Campus Green Team invites you to our Elgin Campus Garden Weed & Mulch Activity. You also can sign up for the campus Green Team and be a “garden investor.” This will allow you to take veggies home and help plan other events. Riverside Campus – The Evolution of Residential Framing
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Parking Lot B
Join the Building and Construction Department in learning more about sustainable building practices for the 21st century. With new technology afoot, you’ll have a hands-on opportunity to see what to expect in the future of construction. You can discuss construction plans with the staff at the event and learn how to design the plans that are best suited for prefab construction. Come see the steel frame of the future! Elgin Campus – Earth Walk

Join the Elgin Campus Earth Walk 2018. Walk the trail that goes to the sustainable agriculture farm on County Line Rd. from the amphitheater and back. Wear appropriate shoes and sunscreen. Meet at the amphitheater on the east side of the campus by 11 a.m. Contact: [email protected]

Northridge Campus Garden Earth Day
9 a.m. to noon on the patio between buildings 1000 & 4000
A volunteer group of faculty and staff adopted the raised garden beds around campus and could use your assistance getting them ready for a new growing season. Join the fun, whether you have 15 minutes or you’re available all morning!  Contact: [email protected]

Northridge Campus Mockingbird Garden Tour
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the patio between buildings 1000 & 4000
The Mockingbird Garden welcomes you visit the campus community garden. Take a tour or get your hands a little dirty in the garden by doing one of the following: planting, mulching, pulling weeds building a trellis and more. We will be giving out samples of fresh herbs. South Austin Campus Lights Out
4 to 5 p.m. at Rm. 1130
ACC Energy Conservation Manager Caleb Crow will demonstrate how much energy can be saved by simply turning out lights when they are not needed. The group will tour the building and see how many lights are on that are not being used and calculate how much energy can be saved if they were turned off. Contact: [email protected]

Elgin Campus Green Team Salad Potluck

Elgin Campus Trash Pick Up

Eastview Campus Butterfly Garden Dig In
Noon to 6 p.m. at Eastview Campus courtyard
Join the EVC Green Team in beautifying the campus with sustainable landscaping. The team will be digging out weeds and preparing the soil for our future butterfly garden. You can also sign up to join the Green Team to help complete the garden and participate in future events. Please dress appropriately with sturdy shoes and long pants. Bring water and wear sunscreen. Elgin Campus Bird Feeder Activity
10 a.m. to noon at Student Commons, Room 1178
The Elgin Campus grounds are full of beautiful and fascinating birds. We strive to provide resources birds need to survive, reproduce, and migrate. Birds need a variety of resources throughout the year. A healthy habitat would include access for food, shelter, and water. The Elgin Campus Green Team will lead an activity to make DIY bird feeders that will hang throughout the grounds. Contact: [email protected]

Round Rock Campus Clean Sweep

Student Life is looking for volunteers to help with a campuswide cleanup. If you are ACC staff, please be sure to have supervisor approval before signing up. Elgin Campus Riverbat Lights Out
10 to 11:30 a.m. Meet at Bldg. 1000
Riverbat Lights Out is a self-check of an ACC campus to determine if we are using our energy and financial resources appropriately. Come help identify lights commonly left on at the Eastview Campus that could safely be turned off to save energy. A short discussion by Caleb Crow, ACC’s Energy Conservation Manager will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Multipurpose Room #1143 followed by a campus walk and discussion of findings. ACC Service Center Garden Refresh
Meet at the main entrance at 11:30 a.m.
Service Center Green Team will meet to refresh the organic garden. Gloves, tools, and plants are provided.

External, Circles Acres Volunteer Day
9 a.m. to noon. Meet at Circles Acres Nature Preserve on Grove Blvd.
