Austin Community College has finalized a new 2018-19 health insurance plan for students. Offered through United Healthcare, plans will be available to purchase by semester or for a 12-month period.
The new policy begins August 22.
“We are committed to providing the best possible plan for our students,” says Dr. Wayne Maines, ACC vice president of safety and operations. “Our existing insurance provider increased the financial responsibility of our students, tripling the credit hour requirements to 9 hours and doubling the cost. We explored other opportunities in the best interest of our students.”
The new plan complies with Affordable Care Act and state requirements and includes an option to add dental coverage. Enrollment is open to all eligible students as mandated by the insurance company. To be eligible, United Healthcare requires students enroll in at least 6 credit hours, three of which may be distance learning. Continuing Education courses that are integrated with credit programs also satisfy eligibility requirements.
Students can enroll during open enrollment beginning August 1. United Healthcare requires the premium payment upon enrollment. For more information about premiums and deductibles, visit the enrollment website at www.uhcsr.com/austincc. The website will be available on August 1.

Students who cannot afford to pay for the whole year up front (many ACC students!) will want to know if their deductible ‘resets’ when they buy the next semester’s coverage. Also, what about students who begin in January – will they be able to enroll for the spring (in December) and then the summer (in May)?

The insurance company can best answer your questions, but we can confirm plans are available to purchase by the year or by semester.

“The student health plan material posted online states that all registered students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours” …
Is this 6 hours per year or 6 hours per semester to be elligible ?

Thank you so much for your consideration for the students of ACC. I really appreciate it and am sure that the students really appreciate it too.

Hopefully, this cuts down on people who were taking a single class just to use the school’s insurance provider. It’s such a shame that influx of users ruined the formerly affordable option for the actual students dependent on required insurance to get through health science programs. It’s still exorbitantly expensive, and the coverage isn’t as great, but maybe the strict requirements will at least slow future price increases some.
