Highland Campus Fontaine Plaza opens with lighting celebration

Austin Community College District’s (ACC) Highland Campus has reached another important milestone with the opening of the Jacob Fontaine Plaza Park.

The plaza, named after local civil rights leader and church founder Reverend Jacob Fontaine, features an art installation called Thicket — 73 purple poles of different heights that illuminate at night to symbolize bats taking flight.

The opening was celebrated on Sunday, September 13, with a special, virtual event. ACC Chancellor Dr. Richard Rhodes hosted a video tribute to kick off the opening and officially turn on the lights. He was joined by ACC Board of Trustees Chair Gigi Edwards Bryant, the family of Jacob Fontaine, and the developer and architect design partners, RedLeaf and dwg., who helped bring the park to life.
