ACC announces new Culinary Arts Career Scholar Program with Fonda San Miguel

Fonda San Miguel presents donation to ACC during Board of Trustees Meeting

Austin Community College District (ACC) and Fonda San Miguel Restaurant (FSM) partner to announce a new scholarship program at ACC. The local and iconic restaurant donated $10,000 to fund a Career Scholars track for Culinary Arts students at the college. The program provides financial support, academic and career guidance, and the opportunity to gain on-the-job skills while taking classes and working at the popular Austin restaurant.

“The best thing ACC can do for the community is to provide access and pathways to their educational and professional goals. FSM understands the mission of ACC. Together we will allow students to get a quality education and real-world training, getting them career ready,” says ACC Chancellor Dr. Richard Rhodes. “This is an exciting time for ACC. We are relieving financial restraints and moving students into higher-paying careers.”

The generous donation will fully fund two all-inclusive Career Scholars scholarships — each named in honor of world-recognized legends of authentic Mexican cuisine: the late Diana Kennedy and the late Miguel Ravago, friends of FSM owner Tom Gilliland.

“Miguel was the first chef to introduce true interior Mexican food to Austin when he arrived here in 1968. Naming the scholarships after Diana and Miguel will continue their lifetime legacies of sharing knowledge and elevating authentic Mexican food to its deserved place at the top of culinary achievements,” says Gilliland. “This is just the start of our collaboration with ACC students to become future leaders in the culinary world and to build Austin’s continued reputation as a national culinary destination.”
