Hip hop was born in New York City at a back-to-school party on August 11, 1973, according to the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop organization. To celebrate and showcase hip hop culture, ACC hosts a 50 Years of Hip Hop celebration.
The event features a student panel and multiple performances. Performers are all from the Austin music scene, and some are ACC alumni:
- Bavu Blakes – Scholar emcee and founder of the Hip Hop Grew Up educational agency
- Anastasia Hera – Rap artist, songwriter, producer
- Ben Buck – From Ben Buck Beatbox and former ACC student
- Thalia Alaniz – DJ and former ACC student
- Brian Malik Baptiste – Grammy Award-winning producer and former ACC student

It is presented by ACC’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center and Audio Technology & Industry Department (ATI) — formerly Music Business, Performance & Technology.
