As students head back to the Austin Community College District (ACC) classroom, the college celebrates students at all different parts of their educational journey.
Meet Kendra Faxigue, a nursing student who will be taking her first classes at ACC. Watch her story above.
“This will be my first class at ACC ever. I am looking forward to knowing that I will always have help through everything, having a good time, and meeting new people. I will be the first one in my family to attend ACC.”
Kendra is in the direct-to-college Career Scholars program for new high school graduates.
“My high school counselor was adamant about pushing the Career Scholars program and telling us how to go to school for free. It is a great program for all students, even if you don’t know where you want to end up.”
All scholars can take advantage of the many perks of the program. Career Scholars aims to make college free as it covers the cost of tuition and fees at ACC — up to $5,000 over three years –– without the need for additional financial aid first.
“I come from a big family. Knowing my school is paid for is one less worry off of me and my parents.”
Kendra has her sights set on finishing the Nursing program at ACC and earning a certification in psychiatric nursing to help support the mental health crisis.
