ACC hosts events to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month

Austin Community College District (ACC) celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of events and conversations. Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the culture and influence of Hispanic Americans throughout history.

Events include:

Fiesta Patrias at Austin Community College District
Date: Thursday, September 14
Time: 12 to 3 p.m.
Location: ACC Riverside Campus | Building G – Parking Lot
What: ACC will celebrate the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month 2023. Students can learn more about ACC’s programs and services.

Cafecito con Samuel Echeverria Cruz: Puerto Rico
Date: Wednesday, September 20
Time: 3 to 4 p.m.
Location: ACC Riverside Campus | El Centro
What: ACC Sociology Professor Dr. Samuel Echevarria-Cruz will present a discussion about Puerto Rico.

Cine at El Centro 2: The Last American Colony
Date: Wednesday, September 27
Time: 12 to 1:30 p.m.
Location: ACC Riverside Campus | El Centro
What: El Centro will host a screening of The Last American Colony, Juan Segarra’s documentary about Puerto Rico’s relationship with the US and the territory’s independence movement.

Mi Sangre: A Conversation with Roj Rodriguez
Date: Thursday, September 14
Time: 12 to 3 p.m.
Location: ACC Riverside Campus | Building G – Parking Lot
What: Local photographer Roj Rodriguez will join a discussion about his recent book of portraits about Mexican life, Mi Sangre. The Student Life Centers at all campuses will display 5 images from Mi Sangre from September 15 – October 15.

All events are free and open to the community. Hispanic Heritage Month events are sponsored by the college’s El Centro/Latin American Cultural Center (LACC) along with Ascender; Student Life; LatinX Student Union (LXSU); Honors Student Organization (HSO); The Art Galleries (TAG); and the ACC Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center.

ACC Riverside Campus is home to the Latin American Cultural Center, also known as El Centro. El Centro serves as a space for community and cultural celebration. The expanded center reopened in April and features a film screening space, gathering area, and specialty library with the rare Tijerina Book Collection.
