ACC Launches New “Bats to Badges” Program to Address Officer Shortage

Austin Community College District (ACC) takes a proactive approach to the nationwide challenge of recruiting and retaining police officers. In a new initiative –– spearheaded by ACC District Police Chief Lynn Dixon –– the College will begin offering “Bats to Badges,” a fast-track program designed to prepare ACC employees for careers in law enforcement.

“At ACC, this job is more about customer service than traditional law enforcement,” says Chief Dixon. “Our officers enjoy engaging with students and staff, and we believe this program is the perfect fit for anyone looking to grow their career here.”

Program Details

The “Bats to Badges” program offers the following pathway for ACC employees:

  • Applications are now open to all active staff, faculty, adjuncts, and hourly employees.
  • Candidates will undergo an interview process and standard background checks conducted by the college and the ACC District Police Department.
  • Accepted applicants will enroll in an accredited Basic Peace Officer Academy.
  • Upon completion, cadets will take the state licensing exam.
  • After passing the exam, cadets will be commissioned by Chief Dixon and begin working full time as officers with the ACC District Police Department.

The college fully funds the academy costs for those accepted into the program. During training, cadets will receive up to 75% of the starting salary for entry-level officers, with a minimum of $47,840. Once commissioned, officers will earn the full salary for pay grade 121, or $56,919 for FY25. In return, cadets must commit to serving as full-time officers for a minimum of two years.

The initiative is a collaboration between ACCDPD and ACC’s Human Resources Department. HR Business Partner Donald Jackson and his team played a key role in bringing the program to life.
