“Always stay true to yourself and YOUR academic journey” | Celebrate Black History Month with ACC student A’leya Campbell

In honor of Black History Month, Austin Community College District (ACC) highlights the voices and experiences of students, reflecting on the significance of this important month.

Meet A’leya Campbell, ACC Communications student, Social Media Coordinator for the College’s Teaching & Learning Excellence Division, and co-host of ACCTV’s “The Bold Way.” For A’leya, Black history is not only a reflection of the struggles and triumphs of the past but a call to continue breaking barriers and redefining narratives for future generations.

What does Black history mean to you?

To me, Black history embodies the perseverance and power of Black Americans. I honor it daily by proudly embracing my identity and serving as an example of representation for my community. I feel like it’s my duty to challenge stereotypes and statistics through my achievements by breaking barriers and redefining narratives.

What does Black History Month represent to you?

Black History Month is a moment to pay homage to our heritage. It represents what we went through, how we created our culture, and where we are today. A lot of our history has been erased or rewritten, so we as people have to keep it alive and updated. Black history is still being made to this day. It influences individuals and communities by staying relevant. We will applaud, praise, and remember our history if no one else will.

How can students and community members amplify Black voices during Black History Month and beyond?

Students and community members can amplify Black voices by choosing not to be a bystander, becoming a vocal ally, and educating themselves. In my opinion, people tend to quietly stand in solidarity to avoid conflict and judgment, which does not benefit us at all. If people want to stand with us, stand on all 10 toes and speak confidently after you’ve researched our history.
