Jalen Easley finds his voice and his next step at ACC

For Jalen Easley, Austin Community College District (ACC) is more than just a starting point—it’s a launchpad. Now 25, the Vocal Performance major first enrolled in 2019 with a clear plan.

“I applied because I wanted to get my core classes out of the way and then transfer to a university.”

That plan is about to pay off. Jalen is transferring to the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, one of the top conservatories in the country.

“I felt like I had finally found my place in the world, and I would be surrounded by people who share my passion for music.”

Jalen’s musical journey began when he was just 8 years old. Over time, his love for piano and soul music evolved into a broader appreciation for music. That appreciation put him on a path of commitment, faith, and embracing opportunity.

“I think you should consider every opportunity before you. You never know which opportunity could lead to more. Ultimately, every chance you take with music helps you grow as an artist, and you learn things in the process that you can take to the next level.”

Now, Jalen is looking ahead to the next big stage: New York City. “Walking down Broadway St and performing in New York… to be right in the heart of Manhattan is a dream. I know the energy there will be inspiring, and I’m excited to start my journey there.”

He knows the support he found at ACC helped him take this next step.

“Dr. Cates, Dr. Anderson, Dr. Sodders, every collaborative pianist and music teacher—I could not have done this without you. I hope you truly know how grateful I am that God placed you on my path. My heart is so overwhelmed with excitement and love for you all. You are forever my family, thank you.”

For students considering college or wondering where to start, Jalen offers this: “Don’t be afraid to take risks. You’ll make mistakes, and things won’t always go as planned, but that’s the beauty of college. You learn so much about yourself through the process. Stay consistent and show up. Showing up is 90% of the challenge!”
