Fifteen years ago, a purple bat took flight — and Austin Community College District (ACC) found its wings.
When the Riverbat brand launched in 2010, it gave ACC more than a mascot. It gave the College a symbol of what connects the entire region: creativity, community, and belonging. What began as a bold idea has since become a recognizable icon of pride across Central Texas — from campus courtyards and graduation stages to parades and community celebrations.
Today, R.B. the Riverbat represents not only ACC’s students and employees but also the College’s deep partnership with the communities it serves.
“R.B. is more than a mascot; he’s a bridge,” says Brette Lea, ACC vice chancellor of College Relations and Marketing. “From the very beginning, launching the Riverbat took collaboration across departments and with our students. Bringing him to life today continues that teamwork and sparks connection, pride, and joy. We are proud that it gives students a chance to grow, lead, and feel part of something bigger than themselves.”

Behind R.B.’s high-fives, dance moves, and ever-present smile is someone who knows him better than anyone else: Dahlia Anzaldua-Torres — or as she likes to say, “R.B.’s mama.”
From Day One, Dahlia has helped bring R.B. to life, guiding him through hundreds of campus celebrations, graduations, and special events. Wherever R.B. goes, Dahlia is close behind, ensuring the Riverbat’s wings continue to spread joy and ACC pride.
As ACC marks R.B.’s 15th birthday this November, the celebration goes beyond the mascot itself — it’s about the people, passion, and pride that have made the Riverbat an enduring part of ACC’s story.
Share what the Riverbat represents to you on our Padlet Wall and join in the celebration the week of November 15. R.B. will visit ACC campuses throughout the week to mark his birthday in true purple pride fashion.
Check the R.B. Appearance Schedule for details, and don’t forget to wear your purple to show your Riverbat spirit!
