The holiday season may be full of joy, celebration, and togetherness, but it can also generate significant waste. Whether you’re hosting, traveling, or enjoying a quiet break at home, ACC sustainability experts offer simple, high-impact actions to help you reduce waste and minimize your carbon footprint.

It is a busy time of year that could equal a lot of waste. Check out our recommendations for small actions (with big impact) that you can take to help prevent waste and minimize your carbon footprint (and impress your peeps) in the New Year.
Unplug for the Break
Before heading out, power down and unplug devices, lamps, and equipment that won’t be in use. “Vampire power” — energy drawn from plugged-in but unused electronics — adds up quickly. Turning off lights and unplugging equipment is safer and saves energy.
Gift Green
Consider gifting experiences, time, or services instead of buying something new. When purchasing traditional gifts, choose durable, long-lasting, or intentionally selected items. Handmade, thrifted, or upcycled gifts add a personal touch while reducing waste.
Reduce Food Waste
Holiday gatherings often mean plenty of leftovers. Bring reusable containers to events, share extra food with guests, and compost scraps or uneaten items whenever possible.
Decorate Responsibly
Choose LED holiday lights — they use less energy, last longer, and are safer. Thrifted décor or decorations made from natural materials offer festive, low-waste alternatives to new, single-use items.
Shop Local
Support local businesses to cut down on shipping impacts and reduce excess packaging. Shopping locally also keeps dollars in the community and helps small businesses thrive during the holiday season.
Travel the Greener Way
If you’re traveling around Central Texas, avoid drinking and driving and consider carpooling with family or friends, using mass transit options, or use your free ACCGreen Pass, which provides unlimited rides on CapMetro bus and rail services. Learn more: austincc.edu/greenpass.
