National Police Week: ACC Honors Officers Dedicated to Serving Students and Community

From helping students in moments of crisis to building relationships across campuses, the Austin Community College District (ACC) Police Department plays a vital role in supporting the College community every day. During National Police Week, May 10–16, ACC recognizes the officers dedicated to creating safe, welcoming environments where students can focus on learning and success.

“We are committed to the safety and security of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors across the College,” says ACC District Police Chief Gizette Disher. “Our officers work every day to build relationships, preserve peace, and ensure every member of the ACC community feels respected, supported, and safe.”

The ACC District Police Department is one of only a few fully commissioned community college police departments in Texas. Officers serve campuses districtwide with a community-oriented approach focused on safety, trust, and connection.

The department’s mission goes beyond traditional law enforcement. ACCPD emphasizes customer service, crisis intervention, emergency preparedness, and community engagement as part of its work supporting student success.

Over the past year, ACCPD officers completed dozens of advanced training programs in areas including de-escalation, active shooter response, mental health response, and crisis intervention. Officers also continue campus outreach efforts through safety presentations, student engagement events, and partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies.

ACC also continues investing in the future of public safety through initiatives like “Bats to Badges,” a program that helps current ACC employees transition into law enforcement careers through a fully funded police academy pathway.

National Police Week was established in 1962 to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to recognize the service and sacrifice of officers nationwide.
