When Nevaeh M. first started working on vehicles with her dad, she wasn’t just learning how to change parts or diagnose problems — she was discovering a passion that would shape her future.
Now, at Austin Community College District (ACC), the 20-year-old Automotive Technology student is building the technical skills and hands-on experience to turn that lifelong interest into a career.
“I was raised by a single father who taught me everything I need to know to be the strong, independent woman that I am today. Anytime he had to maintain or fix one of his trucks or cars, he would pull me outside and teach me how to do everything. Eventually, I decided that I wanted to open a shop with my Dad and needed to go to college to learn everything I could to pursue my goals.”
She chose ACC because it offered an accessible path to turn that passion into a profession.
“It’s a lot of fun learning about all the different types of machines and tools used to make jobs easier. I love being in the shop where I am free to make mistakes and learn from them. I can independently work on a vehicle, and if something doesn’t make sense or I don’t feel confident doing something, my instructors are more than happy to help me understand and thrive.”
Today, she’s learning in the Automotive Technology Program, where classroom instruction is paired with hands-on training in shop environments designed to mirror the automotive industry.
“My instructors always make sure to compare the school shop to actual workshops in the ‘real world.’ I’m constantly hearing, ‘And in a real shop environment…’ or ‘This is exactly what you would be doing in a real shop environment.'”
She says that support has made a lasting impression, especially from instructor Robert Pelham.
“I really want to give a huge thanks to Robert Pelham. He’s a good man and a great instructor. He’s helped all of his students so much and fully supports them in all they do. He does everything he can to make sure everyone understands the work and has the resources to excel.”
This fall, ACC’s Automotive Technology program will expand into a new state-of-the-art facility at the Round Rock Campus, made possible by the 2022 General Obligation Bond. The expanded space will provide larger classrooms, modern labs, and significantly more room for students to gain hands-on experience as demand for skilled automotive technicians continues to grow across Central Texas.
For Nevaeh, those investments mean more opportunities for future students to discover the same passion she has found.
“The new building is much bigger with air conditioning throughout the shop. Bigger classrooms and a bigger shop mean more students can have access to the shop and classes to pursue their dreams. It means more room so everyone can work independently and learn on their own. Having AC and heating throughout the shop also makes it much more comfortable for students to learn.”
Her advice for anyone considering a skilled trade is simple:
“Go for it! Even if you end up not wanting to pursue the trade as a career, it’s a great skill to carry in life.”
