Enrollment is under way for Austin Community College’s Transitions Program, a college preparation course for adults. This fall, classes will be offered both during the day and in the evening. Applications are due Friday, Aug. 23.
Transitions helps high school graduates and GED earners develop and reinforce skills in reading, writing, and math, so they can successfully complete freshman-level college courses. The free program also includes career counseling and guides students through the ACC admissions and financial aid processes.
“I think people should sign up for Transitions because it works,” says program graduate Fernando Martinez, who is now earning As and Bs in his ACC courses. “I met great instructors who helped with networking opportunities, as well as other students who supported me even after the program ended.”
Funded through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Transitions Program pays for college readiness assessment fees and class textbooks. Students who complete the program receive a $100 stipend; those who go on to complete an ACC credit course with a grade of C or better receive a $250 stipend and become eligible for a $1,000 ACC scholarship.
“There is a difference between being eligible for college and being ready for college,” says Charlene Gill, Transitions coordinator. “Transitions gives students the confidence they need to be successful in school.”
The next 12-week Transitions courses begin in September; classes will meet Monday through Thursday at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd.). Students can sign up for either the daytime class, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or the evening class, 6 to 9 p.m.
To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen and 18 or older, with a GED or high school diploma. Current and former developmental education students are encouraged to apply. Applicants participate in a brief interview prior to enrolling and must maintain a 75 percent attendance rate for the course.
To sign up, visit austincc.edu/transitions or contact Charlene Gill at (512) 223.5122 or [email protected].

I am interested on the transitions classes, however I am not a US citizen. I do have a resident alien card.
Please keep me know if I am able to take this course.
Sincerely,
Laura

Hi, Tamiko–
Yes, students must study all three subjects of reading, writing, and math while in the program. They also complete college success workshops in which they learn time management skills, test-taking strategies, note-taking methods, resume writing, and much more…
If you have any other questions, feel free to call us at 223-5122.

Hi,
I understand the classes are for reading, math,& writing, do you have also advanced english class?
By Charlene Gill August 14, 2013 - 10:49 am
Hi, Ana
Thanks for your question. The answer depends on what you mean by “advanced English class”; if you mean a course that prepares students for the rigor of the English Composition classroom and beyond, then yes that is the goal of our English class. If, though, you mean an advanced English language course for ESL students, we do not offer this type of instruction (If you are interested in these courses, check out ESOL classes at http://www.austincc.edu/esol/.).
If you have any other questions, feel free to call us at 223-5122.

Are these classes only offered in a building or can I take them online?
By Charlene Gill August 14, 2013 - 10:46 am
Hi, James
At this time, the classes are only available in a traditional classroom format. However, stay tuned–we hope to offer hybrid and strictly online courses soon!
Thanks for your interest in our program!

You all should advertise this more and more obviously. Maybe on Facebook or make it bigger on ACC’s main page. You should also advertise this on campus advertising boards and places like that. This sounds like a great program and I want people to know it’s there!
