Austin Community College invites veterans, active-duty military, and members of the community to a presentation by Admiral William McRaven, commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, on Friday, May 16. Admiral McRaven was responsible for organizing and carrying out the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in 2011.
The visit is part of “From Humvee to ACC,” a veterans appreciation and resource fair.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for veterans in our community and student body to learn more about the programs and services we offer,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president/CEO. “We owe our service men and women a debt of gratitude, and ACC is pleased to offer them the opportunity to hear from Admiral McRaven and meet with faculty and staff who are ready to help them succeed in college.”
The event takes place at ACC Highland, 6001 Airport Blvd. (map) Admiral McRaven will speak at 11 a.m. (doors open at 10:30 a.m.), followed by a veterans resource fair from noon to 2 p.m. Programs and services represented at the fair include:
· VetSuccess on Campus – A partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans transition to college
· College Credit for Heroes – A program that awards college credit for technical experience
· Texas Veterans Commission – Provides a variety of services for veterans and families
· Austin Vet Center – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs community location
· Honor Flight Austin – Flies World War II veterans to the national memorial
