The Austin Community College District had the fourth-highest CPA exam success rate among major Texas colleges and universities for the most recent reporting period, April through June 2010. ACC was also the top-ranked community college.
The ranking is based on schools with at least 5 students who attempt the exam. ACC students passed 65 percent of sections tested. Here are the complete rankings:
- The University of Texas-Austin (80.1 percent of sections passed)
- Texas A&M University (74.5 percent of sections passed)
- Southern Methodist University (68.52 percent of sections passed)
- Austin Community College (65.22 percent of sections passed)
- Trinity University (64 percent of sections passed)
- Baylor University (63.46 percent of sections passed)
- Lone Star College (62.5 percent of sections passed)
- Texas Christian University (62.3 percent of sections passed)
- Texas A&M International University-Laredo (60 percent of sections passed)
- Houston Community College (58.82 percent of sections passed)
“We are very proud of our students and gratified that the ranking reflects the rigor of ACC’s accounting program,” says Charles Quinn, dean of business studies. “Our students performed better than test takers from a number of prominent Texas universities.”

I thought that a person had to have a bachelor’s degree to be sitting for the CPA. Does ACC have the classes available for students to take to sit for this?

The ACC Accounting Department offers a Professional Accountant advanced technical certificate for students who are pursuing required hours for the CPA exam. The department website has lots of information about the certificate as well as contact information.

The ACC Accounting Department is to be commended for an excellent job in its Texas colleges and universities’ ranking. Dr. People’s energy and commitment are amazing: each accounting student gets one-on-one professional advising even before referral to a designated departmental advisor. Obviously, the Department has a great faculty and outstanding leadership. Congratulations!
