ACC hosts summer music and recording workshops

High school students can learn about music and sound production and get hands-on experience at summer workshops hosted by Austin Community College.

Sessions are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 16-29 and July 23-27 at Northridge Campus recording studios (11928 Stonehollow Dr.).

Hosted by the college’s Music Business, Performance and Technology (MBPT) Department, the weeklong workshops provide students an opportunity to learn about the industry, record a professional band performance, create a remix, and help create a TV commercial.

“The music industry is competitive,” says Geoffrey Schulman, MBPT department chair. “These workshops give high school students a glimpse at the reality. They learn about the job opportunities and how to get started in the field.”

Students will learn how a song is conceived, constructed, and produced, from initial inspiration, rough sketch, and demo, to final recording and mixdown. Students also will learn the basics of music and sound production for film, television, and radio.

The workshops are $50 and include daily lunches and a camp T-shirt. Registration is open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Recent high school graduates interested in attending ACC also may apply.
