ACC rally raises awareness of sexual and domestic violence

TBN Poster 2016Austin Community College (ACC) invites the community to its second annual “Take Back the Night” march, rally, and vigil to raise awareness about sexual and domestic violence from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, at Highland Campus (6101 Airport Blvd.).

The event is held in support of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month and is free and open to the public.

“Nationally, sexual violence affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men, but many victims are too scared to come forward,” says Ronny Washington, ACC Student Life coordinator. “It’s important that colleges and universities do their part to support victims, raise awareness, and create a safe environment.”

ACC Student Life will lead a rally at the west entrance of campus followed by a march and a candlelight vigil. Participants also can participate in the Clothesline Project, an avenue for victims and survivors affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt and hanging it on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence.

“Take Back the Night” is as an international effort to end sexual violence in all of its forms, including sexual assault, sexual abuse, dating violence, and domestic violence.
