Accelerated Programmer Training nominated for state award

The State of Texas has selected Austin Community College’s (ACC) Accelerated Programmer Training (APT) Program as one of eight finalists for the annual Star Award, presented by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for programs that increase access to higher education and training.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as a finalist for this prestigious award,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president/CEO. “The APT Program has been a valuable initiative in partnership with the IT employers to strengthening our pipeline for critically needed tech workers.”

APT is designed to speed entry into tech careers, including computer programming, software testing, computer support, and database administration. Students have the flexibility to study and accelerate their course completion and earn credits for prior knowledge. The program has been particularly beneficial to military veterans as well as unemployed and underemployed adults who have previous technical knowledge or interest. Participants receive personalized guidance and tutoring with a student support specialist when needed. Students also receive career services such as resume writing and interviewing preparation workshops.

The Coordinating Board received 44 nominations and 41 applications for this year’s Star Award. The other finalists represent programs from Coastal Bend College, Odessa College, St. Philip’s College, the University of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown, the University of Texas at Dallas, and the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley.

The Star Award winner will be announced December 1.
