Memory of Mylena Chavez Lives On in Art Study Abroad Scholarship

Update: The deadline to apply for this scholarship, along with all summer 2014 study abroad programs, is March 31.

Mylena Kate Chavez, 24, was a vibrant Austin Community College student and art lover before her death last year. To honor her life, the ACC Art Department and International Programs have established a $2,500 merit-based scholarship in her memory for ACC students who enroll in either the art history or drawing study abroad program.

Chavez entered ACC in 2008 with hopes of making art a big part of her career. She participated in the art history study abroad program last summer, where she explored the rich culture and landscapes of Florence, Italy.

Chavez was killed Sept. 18 in a car crash in Beaumont, which also claimed the life of her stepfather.

The art study abroad scholarship celebrates Chavez’ intelligence, creativity, resourcefulness, and geniality. Chavez taught us “to follow your gut and soak up every minute,” a friend recalls.

Her study-abroad experience gave her ideas on how to master her career, and, as a result, she encouraged her friends to explore other places. It’s that spirit that makes her an example to other ACC students, inspiring them to go above and beyond.
