The college and SpawGlass Contractors, Inc. marked the project’s “topping out” – the safe and successful completion of the main structure’s framework.

The construction team placed a small tree atop the highest point of the structure, the traditional symbol of a topping out accomplishment. SpawGlass served lunch to the construction crew, and ACC President/CEO Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow shared his gratitude for the crew’s hard work and dedication.

“The workers on this site aren’t just building a state-of-the-art campus,” said Dr. Kinslow. “They are helping build futures and paving the road for increased economic development in our community. When it opens next year, this campus will extend many new opportunities and possibilities to the people of Round Rock.”

The Round Rock location, on County Road 112 at University Boulevard, will be ACC’s eighth campus. Phase I of the project, set to open fall 2010, includes five buildings. Work is progressing on all those buildings simultaneously, with the site under construction six days a week. At times crews have worked from 1 a.m. to 9 p.m. through record-breaking heat. Currently SpawGlass employs 230 craftsmen on site along with 50 management staff members.

The initial phase of the campus will accommodate 5,000 students in programs such as Health Sciences and Applied Technology (automotive, welding, building construction). Students, faculty, and staff will enjoy urban green spaces, walkways between buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater. When later phases of construction are complete, the site will include nine educational buildings and serve more than 11,000 students, ultimately making it ACC’s largest campus.

In May 2008, 64 percent of Round Rock ISD voters approved annexation into the ACC taxing district, making area residents eligible for increased services and lower, in-district tuition rates. The college has experienced high growth among Round Rock students since the vote. Spring 2009 enrollments increased about 50 percent over spring 2008 numbers. ACC broke ground on the Round Rock Campus in February 2009.

###

About the Austin Community College District (austincc.edu):
ACC, Central Texas’ community college, is the primary gateway to higher education and career training for residents in eight counties.
