{"id":34425,"date":"2015-05-27T19:18:51","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T19:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=34425"},"modified":"2015-05-27T20:32:08","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T20:32:08","slug":"acc-coordinating-resources-for-central-texas-flood-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/05\/27\/acc-coordinating-resources-for-central-texas-flood-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC coordinating resources for Central Texas flood victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Canned good donations will be accepted at every campus<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Austin Community College District is assisting relief efforts for victims of the Central Texas flooding that occurred Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is difficult to watch our community experiencing such extreme loss,\u201d says Dr. Virginia Fraire, ACC vice president of student services. \u201cIt\u2019s in moments like these that we need to come together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ACC\u2019s Enrollment Management Office will collect canned goods and items for flood victims. The\u00a0most needed items\u00a0for disaster relief are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High-protein canned meals with pop-top cans (ravioli, soups, spaghetti)<\/li>\n<li>Paper goods and products (paper towels\/plates\/cups\/napkins, plastic utensils)<\/li>\n<li>Single-serving meals that do not require refrigeration or cooking\/meals ready to eat<\/li>\n<li>Single-serving snacks such as raisins &amp; granola bars<\/li>\n<li>Peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>Disinfectant wipes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Donations for pets also will be accepted including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Large dog leashes<\/li>\n<li>Rawhides<\/li>\n<li>Puzzle toys<\/li>\n<li>Peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>Meaty treats<\/li>\n<li>Towels<\/li>\n<li>Paper towels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Donations will be accepted at all ACC campuses. \u00a0Look for marked boxes in the campus manager\u2019s office.\u00a0 For more information call 512-223-7701. The first delivery is scheduled for Friday, May 29. A second delivery is scheduled for Friday, June 5.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Volunteers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ACC faculty and staff interested in donating their time to volunteer in relief efforts may contact the American Red Cross, which is mobilizing volunteers, vehicles, food, and relief supplies to help those impacted by the storms. Training is available through the local chapter. More information is available at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/tx\/austin\/volunteer\/application\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">redcross.org\/tx\/austin\/volunteer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students affected by the Memorial Day floods may contact any campus\u00a0Support Center. The college\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/support\/financialaid\/emergencyfund.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Emergency Fund<\/a>, a resource for qualifying students who encounter an unforeseen financial emergency or catastrophic event which would otherwise prevent them from continuing their education at ACC, is available to help those directly impacted by the floods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Needs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ACC has learned of the following additional community resources and relief efforts for flood victims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Red Cross Disaster Relief: <\/em>Donate by check or in person at the American Red Cross of Central Texas (2218 Pershing Drive, Austin, TX 78723), or by phone at 800-928-4271 or by texting REDCROSS to 90999.
